INTEGRITY Empowers Aspiring Student Journalists with a Journalism Workshop
On Saturday, April 6, 2024, INTEGRITY, a Unit Kegiatan Program Studi (UKPS) in Sastra Inggris dedicated to student journalism, hosted a journalism workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshop was conducted in S.303 room at Gedung Sastra Universitas Sanata Dharma. There are 20 eager participants joining this relevant and practical workshop in relation to their study in Sastra Inggris.
Under the expert guidance of Ms. Dewi Widyastuti, the workshop went on into a significant elaboration of knowledge and insight in writing news. Covering an array of essential topics, including "What is Journalism," "News Story," "News Values," "News Gathering Process," and "Headline and Lead Writing Process," participants were guided to write news-worthy and ethical articles. Ms. Dewi's passion and expertise ignites the participants’ spirit in each session, providing them with a solid foundation upon which to build their journalistic aspirations.
Throughout the workshop, participants were encouraged to engage actively in the learning process. Interactive discussions and practical assignments served as exercises, allowing the participants to deepen their understanding and apply newfound skills in real-world scenarios. From dissecting news stories to composing compelling headlines, each activity served as a stepping stone towards journalistic excellence. One particularly impactful moment occurred when Ms. Dewi urged participants to enhance their ‘journalistic nose’ sensitivity and to cultivate curiosity to their surroundings. Emphasizing the importance of observation and awareness, she instilled in attendees a sense of responsibility to uncover and report on stories that matter most to their surroundings. This call to action resonated deeply with participants, igniting a collective passion for storytelling and truth-seeking.
Looking ahead, INTEGRITY remains committed to enhance the talents and ambitions of aspiring journalists. By encouraging participants to explore and report on news stories within their communities, the organization aims to empower them to become conscientious and impactful contributors to the field of journalism. By the workshop participants are equipped with a newfound sense of confidence and purpose. Armed with the knowledge and inspiration gained from the workshop, they stand ready to continue on their journalistic journeys. With events like this workshop, INTEGRITY continues to uphold its mission of fostering integrity and excellence in reporting, shaping the future of journalism one aspiring journalist at a time. As quoted from its website, INTEGRITY “provides a space for students and lecturers to showcase their views and their best works in the world of writing.
