Sat, 31 Jan 2015
Lexicographically or based on a dictionary, the noun freshmen ['freʃmən] is the plural form of the singular noun freshman and it may mean "the first year students, both females and males, at college or university". Next, the term sophomores ['sɒfəmɔ:z] refers to the second year students at college or university, and the singular form is sophomore (without the suffix -s). How about the word alumni [ə'lʌmnaɪ]; is it singular or plural? Well, based on the Oxford Learner's Dictionaries (www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com), the plural noun alumni refers to "the former male and female students of a school, college or university".
