BACKGROUND
Language is an aspect that cannot be separated from our lives. People use language to communicate and make some relations with other people. Moreover, language also plays an important role in this globalization era. Hence, mastering one language is not enough to face the globalization era because there is no longer border that can hinder information and communication around the world. Therefore, the need to master other languages is so important that people are able to take part in this new era.
There are some international languages used to bridge the information and communication around the world, such as English, Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish, Russian and so on. Being able to speak one of those languages will enable people to follow the development of the world. One of the concrete example is English. As one of worldwide languages, English is the most common foreign language learned by Indonesian. People realize that English gives big influence on almost every aspect in their lives. In social aspect, English is the most common foreign language used by society in doing code-switching. On the other hand, English also affects educational aspect. As the evidence, English has become one of complementary courses in Indonesia.
Having seen the importance of English in Indonesian education, as undergraduate students, we realize that it is essential to give other students chance to develop their ability in using English. Giving the opportunity to be more critical towards the issues in education will be one method to improve their English. Moreover, they will also be more concerned with the current educational issues. Therefore, English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University will give opportunity to undergraduate students to share their opinion, idea, and thought through “The First Undergraduate Conference on ELT, Linguistics, and Literature”.
Principally, there are three major fields which will be accommodated in this conference: English Language Teaching (ELT), Linguistics, and Literature. Discussing ELT, undergraduate students will see that English has brought some significant influences on education, such as teaching methods that can be used to teach English in classrooms, designing appropriate materials, managing classroom, and so on. While in linguistics, they can talk about the history of English, the English phonology, English morphology, English pragmatics and etc. In literature, it enables the undergraduate students to investigate the role of English towards Indonesian literary works and other related topics.
THEME BACKGROUND
Language as a medium to communicate is not an automatic thing people got when they was born. Language is learned so that people can communicate well to each other. This happens when people are learning of language focusing on four skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking. On another particular point, learning through language means that people are using the language to learn something else or other fields of specialism, for example, a Japanese student is learning English to be able to read English journals about technology. Learning through English also enables the English way of thinking or western culture to influence the way foreign learners read the journals. This indicates that showing identity through language means that people are able to show other identities which in this context are cultures through language. Therefore, English is the medium to enable people from different countries to see multiculturalism.
Besides the status quo that people in this world are living in a multicultural world, the most crucial status quo is that people are in globalization era. Everything that people learn and see nowadays is directed to global world. The flow of information is so wide and the changing of the world is so fast even before people think whether they are ready for this kind of amazingly great era or not. This fact makes people realize that language as the medium to communicate is a crucial point to adapt to the great flow of information. As the world is changing, the language is also developing. The development of language along with the development of the world shapes the characteristic of the language as the dynamic thing.
Language as the dynamic thing enables it to wide spread in this multicultural world as the demand and the need to use the language increases. English language as the most frequent used in international relation among countries is seen as a tool to communicate in international zone. This fact is not only affecting the governmental offices but also the citizens of the countries to learn English. This demand and need of learning through English, whether people realize it or not is giving the additional point. Along with learning through English, people are exposed to English or western culture. This additional point enables people to see the multicultural world. This fact enriches the knowledge of the people about other cultures and also enriches the cultures that people have already had.
