“How to use ER to help readers cope with challenges”

On May 22, 2021, PBI Sanata Dharma in collaboration with Indonesian Extensive Reading Association (IERA), Extensive Reading Foundation (ERF) and Regional English Language Office (RELO) successfully held a webinar with the theme “How to Use ER to Help Readers Cope With Challenges”.
vERtual Talk #21 is part of IERA, ERF and RELO's work programmes to introduce English language learning through Extensive Reading.

The webinar, which took place on Zoom and was broadcast live-streaming through PBI USD Youtube channel, was attended by around 70 participants from various regions in Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India, and Algeria.

This webinar invited four presenters:
1. Theresia Enny Anggraini, Ph.D.
English Letter lecturer at Sanata Dharma University;
2. M. V. Eka Mulatsih, M.A.
PBI lecturer at Sanata Dharma University;
3. M.M. Nimas Eki Suprawati, Ph.D.
Psychology lecturer at Sanata Dharma University;
4. Firman Parlindungan, Ph.D.
PBI lecturer at Teuku Umar University

Ms. Ika as the first presenter emphasized some key points where literature works help students cope with challenges as shown in her students' (whom she calls "friends") video sharing their reflections toward literature, "every student has an unique ability to appreciate the work of literature and every view that we can gather from our students enriches ourselves", she concluded.

"What comes to our minds when we think of the words, 'children literature'?" Well, we must've probably thought of fun and happy stories. In an enlightening discussion, Ms. Enny brought us to see a new perspective of children books, where sadness is also essential for children to explore their emotions in order to know themselves better.

Ms. Nimas, whose background is in psychology, claimed that Extensive Reading helps students develop their behaviours by relating ER and highlighting similarities to the students' condition.

Through his presentation entitled "Extensive Reading: Do It Because You Want To", Mr. Firman, delivered some practical tips on how to use Extensive Reading to improve our fast, fun, and easy reading activities.
