Technology has modified almost every aspect human life. The sudden and unanticipated changes have often caught us by surprise. Responding to this situation, the Graduate Program in English Language Studies, Sanata Dharma University, held a General Lecture with the topic TRANSLATION: TREND AND TECHNOLOGY IN DISRUPTIVE INDUSTRY on February 5, 2018. The invited speakers are an academician and a business practitioner: Dr. I Gusti Agung Sri Rwa Jayantini, M. Hum from STIBA Saraswati Denpasar and Ms. Henoh Asti Wijayanti, the business development manager of PT. PeMAD International Transearch.
In the first session, Dr. Agung Sri talked about the naturalization and adaptation in scientific texts. Naturalization and adaptation serve as the bridge for achieving equivalence between the target language and the source language. There are three parameters to achieve equivalence, namely accuracy (keakuratan), acceptability (keberterimaan), and readability (keterbacaan). Dr. Agung Sri also emphasized the importance of effectiveness and efficiency within a translation product. She also discussed methods and strategies that might be used to conduct a translation project. A good translator, she added, should “Stay Foolish, Stay Hungry” as Steve Jobs put it in a different context.
In the second session Ms. Henoch Asri Wijayanti talked about how translation was conducted in a translation company. She explained the dynamics in the translation industry and also the latest trend and news in the industry. The translation industry is so huge and prospective that a good translator might earn quite good income from a project. She also introduced the use of Computer-Aided Translation (CAT) Tools. CAT Tools are designed in order to help the translator in completing his or her project in a speedy manner. The development of technology in translation industry covers five points that should be highlighted, namely SMART-CAT, Machine Translation, Apps and Games Localization, and Merger of Translation Agencies.
