Literary Translation Workshop: Fiction is Sexy

On Thursday, November 30th 2016, English Letters Study Program of Sanata Dharma University held the Literary Translation Workshop in Kadarman Room, Sanata Dharma University Main Campus. This translation workshop was followed by students from the English Literature Study Program of Sanata Dharma University and many other students from Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), and Universitas Gajah Mada (UGM).

Vice Head of English Letters Study Program, Mr. Harris Hermansyah Setiajid, M.Hum, gave a presentation about the ‘Translator’s Seven Deadly Sins’ which are some of common mistakes that translators usually do. After the presentation from Mr. Harris, the workshop continued to the main event which was a presentation from Rosemary Kerauly, one of the freelance translators from Gramedia Pustaka Utama Publisher.

Rosemary Kerauly has experienced the translation field for 10 years and she has translated some of the popular fictions from English such as The Martian by Andy Weir, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, and other Indonesian books that she translated into English, which include Senyum Karyamin by Ahmad Tohari. In her presentation, Rosemary explained her main reason to be a translator was especially for literature. “When I came to the translation field, I choose to translate fiction because for me, fiction is more interesting than translating a document. It is because the document translator tends to have no time for play. We can also have a chance to know and deepen our knowledge about the quality of the sources even about the target language. Besides, fiction has a lot of surprises because every genre has different challenges.” She said.

In this workshop, Rosemary also introduced the Jogja Literary Translation Club (JLTC). JLTC is open for the public where the members could share their idea about literary translation with a relaxing atmosphere. The participants of this workshop were given with the opportunity to join the JLTC, a question and answer session, and also translation training led by Rosemary. (RNS)
