On July 9-12, 2018, Rector of Sanata Dharma University, Yohanes Eka Priyatma, Ph.D along with his staffs namely Vice Rector III Father Paulus Bambang Irawan, SJ, STD and Vice Rector IV, FX Ouda Teda Ena, Ed.D attended the International Association of Jesuit Universities Conference at University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. Sanata Dharma University is part of a large network of more than 300 Jesuit universities spreading all around the world. The Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) is chaired by Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ and in this association rectors and leaders of Jesuit colleges and universities met with a motto: “Transforming Our World Together” to explore strategic plans in establishing inter-institutional cooperation networks.
In this four-day event, there are several main speakers who share their views on the development of Jesuit universities around the world. The event featured keynote speakers, such as Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi, Pankaj Mishra, and Gaël Giraud SJ. In the end of each session of the speaker, there is time provided for rectors and leaders of Jesuit universities and colleges to exchange views and opinions in a debate and discussion. On the last day, IAJU's board of directors conducts presentations to discuss the agenda to be implemented by IAJU in the coming year.
In the meeting, IAJU's new board of staff discussed new possibilities in establishing inter-university cooperation, regional networks and international associations. There are also important moments, such as the signing of the new IAJU network constitution at Loyola Sanctuary. Six representatives from various regions and the Superior General of the Society of Jesus signed the constitution and the strategic plan. The USD Rector, who is also president of the Asia Pacific Association of Universities and Colleges of the Asia Pacific (AJCU-AP), signed the document.
On the 13th, it is continued with the AJCU-AP meeting which was attended by 16 chancellors and representatives from universities and colleges in Asia Pacific. The meeting discussed the 2017 activity report and the 2019 action plan. Participants also determined that the international networking officer meeting will be held at Fu Jen University, Taiwan in November, 2018. The next AJCU-AP meeting will be held in Sogang University, Korea.
