The Opening Ceremony of the Chemistry Education Department
As the newest department in Sanata Dharma University, the Chemistry Education Department held the opening ceremony on Friday, 17th November 2017 at Drost Room in Campus III of Sanata Dharma University. The establishment of the new Chemistry Education Department was as the result of the collaboration between Sanata Dharma University, the Korean Government, and Sogang University. Before the opening ceremony, all of the invited guests had a morning mass at 7:15 AM which was led by Fr. Petrus Sunu Hardiyanta S.J., Fr. Eko Budi Santoso, S.J., S.Pd., M.Sc., Fr. Dr. Ir. Paulus Wiryono Priyotamtama, S.J., M.Sc., Fr. Prof. Dr. Paul Suparno, S.J., and Fr. Jong Gou Park, S.J.

At 8:30 AM, the opening ceremony was begun by singing the Indonesia National Song ‘Indonesia Raya’ and the hymn of Sanata Dharma University. For the opening speech, Drs. Johanes Eka Priyatma, M.Sc., Ph.D. as the Rector of Sanata Dharma University (SDU) delivered his gratitude, on behalf of the university, especially to the Korean Government and Sogang University who had given significantcontributions to the establishment of the new Chemistry Education Department at SDU.



The speech was continued by the President of Sogang University, Rev. Jong Gou Park, S.J.. He delivered his gratitude as well since SDU had given Sogang University a chance to contribute to the establishment as the result of the partnership between SDU and Sogang University. In addition, he wished the better development of the Chemistry Education Study Program in the future.



The third speech was given by the Indonesian Private University Coordinator (Kopertis) region V, Dr. Ir. Bambang Supriyadi, CES., DEA.. In his speech, he stated that from 597 departments in Yogyakarta, there are only 7 Chemistry Departments. One of them is in Sanata Dharma University. He hoped that Sogang University can help Sanata Dharma University in the development of the department, for instance in the establishment of a new Chemistry laboratory.

Fr. Petrus Sunu Hardiyanta S.J. as Provincial of the Indonesian Province of the Society of Jesus also delivered his speech in the opening ceremony. He spoke about the 4 focuses led by Jesuit Fathers nowadays. They are reconciliation, collaboration, network, and wisdom. The establishment of the Chemistry Study Program was one of the actualization of those focuses.
The last speech was given by Dr. Ir. Patdono Suwignjo, M. Eng. Sc. as the Directorate General of Institutional Affairs for Science, Technology and Higher Education. The establishment of the new Chemistry Department was one big step in the education world when the quality of the educators in Indonesia was decreasing. According to the the study conducted by BAPPENAS (the Indonesia National Development Planning Board), one of many factors which influenced the decreasing quality of education was the decreasing quality of educators.

After those speeches, the opening ceremony of the Chemistry Education Study Program was officially opened by cutting tumpeng. The students from Chemistry Education Study Program performed a Korean song, an Indonesian traditional song and traditional local dances. Afterwards, Prof. Wonkoo Lee presented the collaboration of the Chemistry Education Department development in Sanata Dharma University. He also shared about some international education programs which were conducted by the Ministry of Education in South Korea.


The last agenda, but not the least, was the panel seminar presented by Dr. Ir. Patdono Suwignjo, M. Eng. Sc. with the theme, Indonesian Policy on Higher Education and Prof. Lee Beomhoon, as the Dean from Sogang University, who raised the theme, Science Education in Ko
rea. The moderator of the seminar was Fr. Eko Budi Santoso, S.J., S.Pd., M.Sc. The seminar was ended at 11:30 AM with lunch time.
